Depression is a condition that affects thousands of individuals. Many factors may contribute to the development of depression including family history, a traumatic event, stress, serious medical conditions, and other psychological conditions. No matter the cause of depression, it is essential that it be recognized and treated as soon as possible. It is a challenge for these individuals with depression to have the energy or desire to perform any of their regular daily activities including employment or taking care of their families. For this reason, treatment with an anti-depressant like Pristiq is often necessary for individuals suffering depression. Pristiq works by targeting the neurotransmitters in the brain, which are responsible for causing depression.
Wyeth manufactures not only Pristiq but it also is responsible for the production of its cousin Effexor (venlafaxine). Effexor works in a similar manner as Pristiq, by targeting specific neurotransmitters in the brain.
There are many anti-depressant medications currently on the market. Almost every pharmaceutical company manufactures some kind of anti-depressant. Some of the most commonly used medications that are currently on the market are Celexa (citalopram), Lexapro (escitalopram), Paxil (paroxetine), Prozac (fluoxetine), and Zoloft (sertraline). Many of these agents work in a similar manner. However, the use of these medications is very patient specific. Each patient will react differently to a medication.
The major difference between Pristiq and its counterpart Effexor, is that Pristiq does not need to be titrated to the desired dose as Effexor does, which saves time for the patient. Besides this slight difference, Effexor and Pristiq are very similar and as mentioned before it will be very patient specific in determining the appropriate choice for each patient.
